Special Events

Academic Fairs

Twice a year, we open the doors to the community for an afternoon of educational exploration.  The Harkness Humanities and STEAM Fairs are events where students get to showcase some of the projects that they work on during the school year.

Humanities & Social Sciences Fair

In this event, students share some of the projects they have worked on during the semester in their humanities and social sciences classes. Community members get to enjoy poetry readings, learn about books, authors and literary movements in our students’ informational booths, and even play some history-themed games! The afternoon also includes a series of oral presentations from our students, teachers, and special guests! In 2023, we even celebrated the publication of the book of one of our own faculty members. The event ends with the ceremony for Letras Juveniles, a Harkness contest that celebrates the literary creations of middle and high school students from Bahía de Banderas and Puerto Vallarta.

This is also an opportunity for the community to witness our core method in practice: the Harkness Discussion. Our guests observe as a selection of our students and teachers engage in a discussion on a different topic each year.

STEAM Fair

In preparation for the STEAM fair, students from all grade levels work hand-in-hand with their teachers to design and execute team projects in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Technology. They research, put together proposals, design and execute experiments, create reports, and put together their presentation materials. At the event, friends, family, and community members are invited to walk around the venue to see the presentations of each team in their individual stand. This section is followed by a guest speaker. The evening concludes with the award ceremony for the winning projects, which are judged by several members of the faculty.

This event also hosts our annual Art Silent Auction. The art pieces, which are created by all the sophomores and the upperclassmen taking the Art workshop, are auctioned to the community in order to raise funds for a local charity. The pieces demonstrate the students’ dedication to artistic expression and ability to challenge themselves in unexpected ways.

Additional Community Events

Holiday Dinner and Talent Show

Our holiday dinner is one of our dearest events of the year. Before we go home for the winter break, the whole Harkness Community gathers for an evening of shared food and holiday joy. Each Harkness family brings a dish to share with the community, as we spend quality time chatting and connecting with friends and family. The evening also includes our annual talent show, where our students and teachers have the opportunity to share their music, writing, humor or dance moves!

Annual Fundraiser

Every year, our school staff and student body team up to put together an event with the purpose of raising money for student activities and scholarships. These funds support our students as they pursue excellence in their education, participate in national and international academic competitions, and create and partake in extracurricular activities that improve their sense of community, address their socioemotional and intellectual needs, and create opportunities for them to practice their leadership skills.

Harkness Days

During the spring semester, Harkness opens its doors to students from secundarias from all over the bay so that they can get a taste of the Harkness method. With the help of current students, prospective students engage in Harkness Discussions and participate in science and technology activities. At the end of the day, they also have the opportunity to ask questions to the current students about what it’s like to be a Harkness Student!
