Conversational Intelligence
Conversational Intelligence (C-IQ) is a framework developed by organizational anthropologist Judith E. Glaser that refers to the ability to engage in effective and meaningful conversations that foster trust, understanding and collaboration.
This framework helps us understand why the Harkness Method works. C-IQ encompasses a range of skills such as active listening, empathetic communication, and the art of asking powerful questions, all of which also lie at the heart of the Harkness Method.
The Harkness Method aims to develop C-IQ in our students. When our students engage in active participation, embrace collaborative and inquiry-based learning, put into practice their critical thinking, and build trust and empathy, they create an environment of trust, respect, and open dialogue. This, in turn, encourages our students to engage in transformational conversations, where they actively listen to one another, demonstrate empathy, build on each other's ideas, and collaboratively explore complex topics to deepen understanding and generate new insights.
Cultivating C-IQ not only improves their learning experience, but it also positively impacts their personal and future professional lives. It improves interpersonal relationships, enhances leadership capabilities, increases team productivity, and it creates a more inclusive and innovative culture in their workplace. In essence, it equips them with the skills to navigate complex social dynamics, resulting in more positive and impactful interactions.
